Report: Rory McIlroy missed out on the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards

Rory McIlroy missed out on the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards as Fleetwood performed. August 26, 2023; Atlanta, Georgia, USA; Rory McIlroy hits the third green during the third round of the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club.

World number two Rory McIlroy has been named BBC Sports Personality of the Year after a fantastic year in golf and in Rome. However, the Irishman appeared to be absent from the event as he was replaced by Tommy Fleetwood. McIlroy did not give a reason for his absence. He never won the title.

English cricketer Mary Earps took the honours, with cricketer Stuart Broad in second place. Commonwealth champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson was third. Rory has never won the title and has finished second since 2014, when Lewis Hamilton won. However, his nomination for 2023 is due to his outstanding performance throughout the season. Rory McIlroy and his special year in professional golf McIlroy won the Dubai Desert Classic with a dominant performance over four days.

His scores were 66-70-65-68. He then won the Genesis Scottish Open with a 15-under par 265. He also received a $1,575,000 Renaissance Club jackpot. However, McIlroy’s biggest contribution came from Marco Simone in the Ryder Cup, helping his team to victory. The score for the European was 16.5-11.5, a feat McIlroy wanted after losing at Whistling Sound. “[Winning] means a lot. “I was very sad after the Whistling Straits, we all were, and I wanted to come here to Rome this year to recover.”

In November, he won his Dubai Race title and won the Player Impact Program title, which earned him $15 million. Also, as golf has not received much recognition in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards, it is fitting that golf is included in the awards ceremony. To date, only two golfers have received this award. Dai Rees helped the British Ryder Cup team win their first title in 1957.

Then came Sir Nick Faldo, who was honored for winning the 1989 Masters. Voting for the prestigious award has been scrutinized by the public and will be broadcast on Tuesday. McIlroy may have missed out on the honor this year, but could win it in 2024.
