Marielle Thompson and Reece Howden win the Ski Cross World Cup in Italy

Marielle Thompson and Reece Howden win the Ski Cross World Cup in Italy on Saturday.
Marielle Thompson of Whistler took first place in the women’s race and Reece Howden of Chilliwack won the men’s race.

   This is the third time in cross-country skiing that Canadian men and women have won races on the same day.
Brittany Phelan of Mont-Tremblant placed second in the women’s division.

This win was Thompson’s second win of the year and his twenty-seventh World Cup win.

   Howden’s win was his second of the season, taking his tally to 11 in 52 World Cup races.
Canada’s India Sherret won her first World Cup gold medal in figure skating on Friday.
Sherret, of Cranbrook, B.
C., won the final in 55.8 seconds, defeating Saska Rock (55.96) and Talina Gantenbein (56.06).

    “I want to jump smooth today and improve my start,”
Thompson said of Saturday’s race.
“I learned a few things from India’s strong start yesterday and the speed with which my teammates and the rest of the field skated today, that’s enough..
