Rasheed Wallace isn’t the greatest player of all time, but he was quite a memorable one. The versatile big man was a four-time All-Star who won the 2004 NBA Finals with the Detroit Pistons and asserted himself as one of the top two-way big men of his era.

Wallace also made history in some unique ways, as he has the most ejections in NBA history and the third-most technical fouls. When talking about his peculiar achievements, Wallace claimed to be the first player in the league to drive a Maybach as his car.

Wallace recalls the story of getting his Maybach

It’s no secret that players in the NBA make quite a bit of money. So what do they spend all that money on? A variety of things, of course, but one of the top luxury items that these guys love to splurge on is cars, and that’s what Wallace did during his career.

Wallace recalled visiting a childhood friend who played for the New York Yankees in the MLB down in Florida when they ended up at a Mercedes Benz dealership. Wallace became enamored with a Maybach, and the rest was history.

“We get there, I’m just walking around, just looking, like ‘Oh, that’s a nice car,'” Wallace recalled on That’s What Sheed Said. ” So I asked the dude, ‘Yo, come here for one second. What is this?’ He’s like ‘That’s a version of a Maybach, it used to be an older Mercedes Benz car, they tryna bring it back out, it’s luxury.'”

“He ran the whole spiel. ‘How much is that?’ He’s like ‘You can get one, we can start billing it for a small deposit.’ I was like, ‘Well, what’s the deposit?’ He’s like, ‘It’s 50 down.’ Two weeks later, I got everything. I had got the little pamphlet, I could pick my different colors, different leathers, different wood grains…I go pick it up…I ride around town, ride on the highway, get used to it. When you have millions of dollars like Wallace does, you can afford to make these sorts of wild purchases whenever you please. He likely walked into the dealership with no intention of buying a car but made a $50,000 down payment on a Maybach instead.

While Maybach’s are more popular nowadays, they weren’t back in the early 2000s, which is when this story takes place. Wallace’s flashy new car caught his teammates’ attention, and you can make a case that helped bring them to prominence.

Chances are Wallace didn’t do this every time he went into a car dealership; otherwise, he would run out of money very fast. But Maybach’s are very nice vehicles, and while they weren’t that prominent then, they jumped out to Wallace, and he quickly made it on his own.

Nowadays, you’ll see many wealthy folks with Maybach’s in their repertoire of cars, and Wallace looks back on this story fondly now that they are increasingly popular. According to Wallace, this story may have started over 20 years ago.
