ATHENS – Although the Georgia-Texas rivalry is still a month away, many people are excited about the SEC rivalry.
When Texas enters the SEC this year, it will be the first time the two teams meet as conference opponents. The Longhorns are one of six teams to join the Big Ten or SEC in 2024.
Texas made the College Football Playoff last season, but Georgia did not. The Bulldogs won back-to-back national championships, but their 29-game winning streak was snapped by an Alabama team that was beaten by Texas earlier in the season.
Despite losing a lot of talent on both sides, Georgia and Texas return their starting quarterbacks from last year in Carson Beck and Quinn Ewers. The top receivers are among the best in the country and could enter the Heisman Trophy conversation according to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg.
“Texas appears to be in the running to make a run in the SEC after the team beat Alabama on the road last year and made its first CFP at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium in 2022. Rittenberg wrote, “Carson Beck- Quinn Ewers could be a Heisman Trophy contender for 3,479 yards and 22 touchdowns.
Georgia and Texas entered the transfer window to better surround both quarterbacks with talent. Each school added three wide receivers since the transfer window. Georgia’s efforts were highlighted by Vanderbilt wide receiver London Humphries, while Texas was able to secure the services of Alabama transfer Isaiah Bond.
“We’re very committed to taking advantage of that and bringing in talented players to help our program,” Beck said before the Orange Bowl. “I look at some of the guys that are going to help us next year and I’m really excited to work with them and build that chemistry.
Rittenberg is not the first person to mention the Heisman Trophy for Beck. Beck and Ewers are the early Heisman favorites.
Georgia wide receiver Dillon Bell, who may be Beck’s top target next year, talked about Beck’s Heisman awards shortly after the team’s win over Florida State.
“He Reads the defense so well, have a hand and have a lot of confidence. Bell said. “We all hope and trust him. I mean, he’s going to win the Heisman, we talk about it, and I think he’s going to win the Heisman next year.
Georgia won the Heisman Trophy in 1982 when Herschel Walker won the award. Quarterback Stetson Bennett is a finalist for the 2022 Heisman Trophy, finishing fourth in the voting.
The Georgia-Texas game is scheduled for October 19 in Austin.
The Bulldogs have already played road games at Kentucky and Alabama, as well as against Clemson in Atlanta, so Georgia will have a test before the trip..
