PGA Tour Full Update: DP World Tour Hands Jay Monahan and Greg Norman the Biggest 2024 Upset

It seems the DP World Tour one-upped the PGA Tour and LIV Golf! As per a DP World Tour report, it appears that the European circuit maintained its position as one of the most tech-forward global organizations in 2023. The report indicates how it has beaten the likes of its counterparts in golf, including the Greg Norman-led LIV Golf and the Jay Monahan-led PGA Tour.

The news was shared by the official X handle of the tour. Moreover, it divulged how, as per reports from the 2023 Sports Technology Power List, the body has managed to maintain its rank at the fourth position for the second year in a row!

DP World Tour shines over LIV Golf and the PGA

TourThis list of the most tech-forward organizations in the world is compiled annually by the STA Group, a technology development and consulting organization, as part of the Sports Technology Annual Review. It was introduced in a bid to celebrate and recognize various brands from all around the world that have contributed to the realm of sports via technology. As for the DP World Tour, it sealed its place on the list because of the Ryder Cup that took place in September.

As per the DP World Tour report, “An in-depth case study that highlights the advancements in data and technology to benefit the spectator experience at the 2023 Ryder Cup features in the fourth edition of the Sports Technology Annual Review.” The prestigious biennial tournament, dubbed one of the “most digitally engaging” Ryder Cups in history, saw several developments taking place, including the launch of Outcome IQ powered by Capgemini and an integrated private 5G and WiFi network by Hewlett Packard Enterprise, among others. So, what did they have to offer?

The former of the two was introduced to amplify the fan experience while providing live and historical outcome probabilities for each hole and match of the competition. The latter was aimed at combining Athonet private 5G with HPE Aruba Networking WiFi technology to provide “new ultra-secure capabilities, greatly expanded coverage, and enhanced fan and staff experiences at an unprecedented scale.” With the European Tour establishing itself as a prominent player in the sports technology department, who else joined the list?

For the first time ever, Red Bull Racing took the top spot. Other spots in the top 10 have been clinched by the likes of the National Basketball Association (NBA), the International Cricket Council (ICC), and the National Football League (NFL). It’s safe to say that, being placed among these leading organizations, the recognition comes as nothing short of an incredible achievement by the circuit and its current but soon-to-be-exiting CEO, Keith Pelley.

But curiosity naturally falls on the community. What else did the prestigious tournament boast so as to trump its counterpart circuits in the sport to clinch the fourth spot on the rankings aside from the network and Outcome IQ?

Creative Technology (CT) was able to provide the biennial tournament with an array of displays and screens to keep every person engaged in the game that was going on at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club. CT is a “long-term provider of audio-visual services to the Ryder Cup,” the latter being the 10th European tourney that the company has managed to support. Moreover, the organization also provided the event with around 600 televisions (55-inch and 65-inch), which were connected via a wide IPTV network, allowing the audience to watch the game hassle-free.

Was that all? Not even close. The event boasted 24 large LED screens, with over 2,000mof LED and over 500 Digital TVs; over 800 Access Points of WiFi6 deployed; a shot-by-shot tracker with multiple data points; Location-based insights to inform the fans about the players’s performances; an occupancy indicator telling people where to watch, eat and buy; and a narrative for every shot displayed on the large digital screens that were present on course. No wonder they managed to bag the fourth spot. Take a bow, DP World Tour!
