Despite win, Coach Prime disappointed in CU Buffs’ performance
TEMPE, Ariz. – Four times on Saturday night, Deion Sanders apologized for the anger he expressed during a postgame press conference.
Colorado’s head football coach acknowledged the importance of getting a victory, but the way the Buffaloes played at Mountain America Stadium isn’t exactly what Sanders has in mind for his team.
Sanders summed up the night succinctly with his first seven words of the press conference after CU’s 27-24 win against Arizona State.
It was wonderful only in that CU needed it. The Buffs (4-2, 1-2 Pac-12) snapped a two-game losing streak and an eight-game skid in conference play. They’ve now topped the oddsmakers’ preseason over/under projection of 3.5 wins and they took an important step towards bowl eligibility.
It wasn’t a wonderful performance, though.
I’m sorry,” Sanders said. “I’m happy about the win but I’m not happy in the fashion that we won it in. We’re better than that. We really are better than that. And we’ve got to start showing that. I expect to win and I expect to win in a better fashion than that. I’m sick of these consistent holes that we’re displaying and the penalties and the things that we’re doing. We’re so much better. I apologize for my anger today, but I don’t accept mediocrity. Maybe you do, maybe you can live with it. Maybe you sleep with it. Maybe you live with it. Maybe you’re comfortable with it, but I’m not.”
CU was favored against the Sun Devils (1-5, 0-3), who dropped their fifth straight, but didn’t secure the win until Alejandro Mata punched a 43-yard field goal through the uprights with 12 seconds left to play.
