The San Francisco Giants feel a sense of urgency as the winter meetings begin
The San Francisco Giants missed the playoffs last season.
Last winter, they failed miserably in their attempt to sign a star player.
It’s never a good thing when a bunch of fans are incredibly angry.
It’s even worse if an even larger block simply doesn’t seem interesting, judging by the number of visitors.
The Giants, like every major league club, are eager to make a statement acquisition (or three) as winter meetings begin Sunday in Nashville.
This is the unpleasant part.
You are not alone in this feeling of hopelessness.
Despite the expanded postseason field, the New York Yankees and New York Mets also missed out on the playoffs.
The same goes for the Boston Red Sox and St.
Louis Cardinals.
These are all gem series with demanding and disappointed fans.
When high expectations are not met, organizational hierarchies tend to overreact.
The deeper these hierarchies go, the more pronounced the overreaction becomes.
“I think there’s going to be a sense of urgency,” Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said at a GM meeting in Arizona last month.
“We certainly feel that way.
We don’t want to speak for other teams, but we can only express how we feel, not having been to the playoffs in years.
So it’s an impressive offseason for us.
Getting through the season will be even more important than usual
Therefore, you can imagine that having several such teams would have a cumulative impact on the market.
