The Red Sox now have the worst defense in the MLB
The Boston Red Sox have now lost four straight games after falling to the Los Angeles Angeles 7-0 at Fenway Park on Friday.
It would be one thing if they were getting outplayed each and every night, but they’re making key mistakes that are directly leading to runs and losses.
Through the 14 games so far this season, Boston leads the league with 16 total errors (tied with the Oakland Athletics). Those errors have led to 19 unearned runs.
In the first inning of Friday’s contest, shortstop David Hamilton threw a ball that pulled second baseman Pablo Reyes off the bag. Instead of potentially pulling off a double play, everyone was safe. Los Angeles went on to score three runs that inning.
Then, in the third, center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela, who just received a contract extension, fielded a single up the middle, but he made a poor throw that bounced away from first baseman Triston Casas, resulting in another run scoring and the other two runners moving up a base.
When the pitchers aren’t superstars and the offensive firepower isn’t there, the team should, at the very least, be able to field balls cleanly. It’s the fact that they can’t that’s led to Red Sox fans frustration and a cacophony of boos at Fenway Park. And it pays off..
