According to the New York Post , Mahala will become the Mets’ minor league coordinator and David Stearns’ new president of baseball operations. Mahala spent four years with the Phillies, serving as a player communications assistant before being promoted to offensive development supervisor. He became the Phillies’ pitching coordinator and development supervisor a year ago. He could be a big piece of the puzzle in terms of developing outfield prospects for the Mets.
According to MLB.com, eight of the team’s top 10 hitters are hitters. Among them were three prospects acquired through trades at the deadline: Luisangel Acuña, Drew Gilbert and Ryan Clifford. Jett Williams, the Mets’ 2023 Minor League Player of the Year, is also on the list.
Acuna, Gilbert and Clifford are three players set to join the Mets in early 2024, while Williams will be called up in late 2024 or 2025. Before joining the Phillies, he played two years in minor league baseball in 2020. The Pirates of Pittsburgh drafted him in the 18th round by George Washington. In two seasons playing minor league baseball for the West Virginia Black Bears and West Virginia Power, he hit .243/.319/.317/.636 with six home runs and 45 RBI.
He was also named a 2016 New York-Penn League All-Star. With George Washington, he played three seasons in college baseball, batting .264 with 7 home runs and 90 RBIs.
