Rebecca Cheptegei, an Olympic participant in the 2024 Paris Games, was hospitalized with severe injuries on the evening of September 2.
Details: The Uganda Athletics Federation reported that she passed away in the hospital from her injuries on September 5. Federation President Donald Rukare stated:
“We have learned of the tragic death of our Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei due to a brutal attack by her boyfriend. May her soul rest in peace. We strongly condemn violence against women.
This was a cowardly and senseless act that resulted in the loss of a great athlete. Her legacy will endure.”
As a reminder: The incident occurred at Rebecca’s home during a dispute with her boyfriend, Dixon, over land. Cheptegei sustained 75% of her body burned.
