With the last major track meet of the 2024 season set for September 13 and 14 at the Brussels Diamond League, Sha’Carri Richardson, Letsile Tebogo, and Julien Alfred are among the headliners of 82 medallists confirmed for the star-studded meet.
Richardson and Alfred will rekindle their rivalry in the women’s 100m event, where both speedsters will be gunning for a final season-ending win to close off an outstanding year.
St. Lucian star Alfred, defeated the American for the Olympic 100m title in Paris, which Richardson will later get her revenge in their first race post-Olympics at the Zurich Diamond League last week
Despite a poor start, the world 100m champion’s top-end speed proved just too good for the rest of the field as she blazed past a fast-starting Alfred and Dina Asher-Smith to cross the finish line first in a blistering 10.84s.
The newly crowned Olympic champion settled for second in 10.88s, edging Asher-Smith who finished third in 10.89s
Africa’s fastest woman in history Marie Josee Ta Lou-Smith was fourth in 19.93s, as US youngster Tamari Davis completed the top 5 in 11.06s.
Richardson’s bounce back to winning ways against a star-studded field in Zurich proves that the American track star is still on top of her game and the one to beat on any day.
Also, losing to Alfred in Paris may have boiled down to the unfortunate circumstance of being denied entry into the stadium a few hours before her semifinal race which could have affected her mentally and physically.
With the Diamond League final set to take place in Brussels, Richardson and Alfred will meet again gunning to have a perfect end to the season by taking the needed win to claim the prestigious trophy.
