That scarred me for life” – Larry Bird said getting married at 19 was his “biggest mistake”
Larry Bird played a pivotal role in the Boston Celtics’ success during the ’80s, leading the team to three championships. The C’s relied heavily on their superstar forward, which made on-court mistakes inevitable. However, for the three-time MVP, the most significant blunder occurred off the court when, at the age of 19, Larry Legend decided to tie the knot.
As a child, Bird held the belief that individuals who get divorced “were the devil.” However, he found himself in contradiction when, within a year of marrying his first wife, Janet Condra, he experienced the same fate.
Labeling the marriage as his “biggest mistake,” the burden and stress of separation left a scar on Larry for life as he got to know about Condra’s pregnancy after their divorce.
“Getting married was the worst mistake I ever made. Everything that ever happened to me I’ve learned from it, but I’m still scarred by that. That scarred me for life,” Bird said. “That and being broke are the two things that influenced me most.”
