Rory McIlroy Takes Brutally Well on Tiger Woods’ Ex-Coach Over US Open Criticism
Hank Haney criticized Rory McIlroy and his caddy Harry Diamond after last month’s US Open, and the four-time champion fired back viciously
Rory McIlroy didn’t hold back when he responded to the criticism he and his caddy Harry Diamond faced after the US Open from former Tiger Woods coach Hank Haney.
McIlroy missed out on his first title in 10 years at Pinehurst No. 2, losing by one stroke to Bryson DeChambeau. The Northern Irishman led by two shots through five holes and made three bogeys on the fourth hole to give DeChambeau the US Open crown.
Much of McIlroy’s final stretch has been questioned, including his club choice, particularly the 15th and 18th tees. McIlroy flew his tee shot long onto the green on the par-three 15th, resulting in the first of his three bogeys.
The latest came at 6 p.m. when he opted to hit driver on the final hole of the fourth round, which spelled trouble when he three-putted from the same tee on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The costly decision prompted Haney to point the finger at McIlroy’s Diamond box as Woods’ former ally lashed out on social media.
At the time he tweeted: “If Steve Williams was Rory’s caddy I can promise you he would never have hit that perfect flying 7 iron that rolled over the green on the 15th, a terrible lie because he would have an 8 iron and sent it straight into the air and kept the green.
Haney added, “Wrong club, wrong shot, bad plan. Players who won more than 2 majors won one out of every 3 times when they were in serious competition. At the front or somewhere around. the front on Sunday It was not certain that @McIlroyRory finished the US Open, a difficult game..
