Full time: USWNT beats Japan 1-0, advances to semi-finals

Alexander Smith

It was far from a convincing win, but they got there in the end. Trinity Rodman’s extra-time goal gave the United States a 1-0 win over Japan, meaning they will face either Canada or Germany in the semi-final Tuesday.

Though the U.S. dominated possession, they lacked quality in the final third and were mostly unable to breakdown Japan’s disciplined defensive structure. It took a moment of magic from Rodman to break the impasse, controlling the ball on the right-side of the penalty area, cutting back to beat her defender and curling a sweet shot into the opposite corner.

Questions will be asked whether fatigue is a factor; the team has rarely changed up its starting line-up this tournament. And the first substitution today only came after 90 minutes.

Simone Biles defeated Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade once again in the vault apparatus final today, winning her third gold medal of the Paris Olympics. It’s her 10th Olympic medal and seventh gold.

Biles performed her iconic namesake vault, the Yurchenko double pike, or “Biles II” for the last time in Paris. Her second vault was a “Cheng,” which features a half-turn onto the table, followed by a 1.5 twist into the air.

After a fluke tripping incident in Tokyo kept her out of the vault medals, Jade Carey will earn a podium finish in Paris.

She earned a 14.733 for her first vault, a Cheng, and a 14.200 for a double-twisting Yurchenko, giving her a 14.466 average.
