Scottie Scheffler’s response to Nelly Korda breaking his streak is a testament to his character.
Despite being the current leader of the men’s Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), the 27 year old acknowledges another golfer who’s outshining him. That golfer is Nelly Korda, the reigning women’s world No. 1, who is on a hotter winning streak than Scheffler.
The 25 year old matched an LPGA record by clinching her fifth consecutive victory – the latest at The Chevron Championship over the weekend.
Scheffler has also been on a roll lately. The American golfer has triumphed in four of his last five PGA Tour starts, including a first-place finish at The Masters earlier this month, which earned him his second green jacket in three years.
Despite being the first player since Tiger Woods in 2007-2008 to secure five straight top-two PGA Tour finishes, Scheffler maintains that his impressive run doesn’t hold a candle to Korda’s achievements.
“One of the people here asked me, like, ‘Is this turning into a competition between you and Nelly? ‘ and I was like, I don’t know, man, I think if it’s a competition, she’s got me pretty beat right now,” he shared on Monday, according to pgatour.com.
“Five wins in a row … it’s pretty special stuff. To win four times in a row and then show up at a major championship and win is extremely impressive. So I’m extremely happy for her.”
With her victory on Sunday at the first major championship of the 2024 LPGA season, Korda has added her name to a prestigious list, joining the likes of iconic golfers Annika Sorenstam and Nancy Lopez as the only three women in history to win five consecutive starts.
The winning spree, which includes titles at coveted tournaments like LPGA Drive On Championship, Fir Hills Seri Pak Championship, Ford Championship, T-Mobile Match Play and The Chevron Championship, bounce back impressively after a lackluster start to the season at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions.
