Report: Browns hiring Duce Staley as running backs coach, but his response is sickening


Staley joined the Browns after parting ways with Stump Mitchell.

Former NFL running backs coach and Panthers running backs coach Duce Staley will be hired as Cleveland’s running backs coach, Josina Anderson reports.

    Staley, who also interviewed with the Jets, will fill the role of Stump Mitchell, who was fired last week after serving as running backs coach for the past five years. Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and coach T.C. McCartney was also fired but not replaced.

Staley, an assistant coach for the Lions and Panthers, was with the Panthers last season, ranking 20th in the league with 104.1 rushing yards per game. Panthers running backs Chuba Hubbard, Miles Sanders and Raheem Blackshear averaged just 3.5 yards per carry last season, but the Panthers have one of the most efficient offensive lines in the league and one of the worst, at least, will be behind the league. 13.9 points per game.

Staley previously served as the Lions’ head coach and running backs coach from 2021 to 2022.
Detroit went from 19th in the league in 2021 to 11th in 2022.

He served in a number of roles. with the Eagles from 2011 to 2020, including special teams quality control coach, running backs coach and second baseman. With
rushing yards, Staley played for the Eagles (1997-03) and Steelers (2004-06). He had 5,785 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns and 2,587 total receiving yards and 10 touchdowns during his career.

   Staley coached the Browns, who finished 12th in the league last season in a season in which Nick Chubb played just two games. Jerome Ford entered his second NFL season as the starting quarterback with 4 yards per carry.
general manager Andrew Berry said Monday the team plans to keep Nick Chubb on the roster through 2024, the final year of his contract, despite the expected high salary, for the 29-year-old’s return after the season .
