Leclerc warns of dangerous F1 precedent after Verstappen avoids penalty

Verstappen was not penalized for the separate blocking incidents in Singapore and Leclerc is worried about the potential fallout.

Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has warned that Max Verstappen’s escape from a penalty during Singapore GP qualifying could lead to “bad situations” for F1 going forward. The championship leader was investigated for three separate incidents in qualifying last weekend, getting away with just two reprimands, but no action was taken in the multi-car melee in the final sector.

Questions were asked about his blocking against AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda and stopping to create an opening in the pit lane as competitors had previously been penalized for similar offences. Regarding the continuity problems,

“I was a little surprised, especially on pit road, because it can open up some pretty bad situations in the future. “It’s always an open conversation with the FIA and we’re trying to explain to them what our position is and what we can improve. I’m sure we’ll discuss it in the [drivers’] press conference.”

We work closely with the FIA After adding his thoughts on Verstappen’s escape and continuity of leadership in F1, Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton admitted: “I didn’t really see [the incidents]. “I was in the pit lane when everyone stopped and I couldn’t see what was happening.

“We always work together and we work so closely with the FIA that we have continuity and rotation, so we have to keep working on that.”
