A Dominican court sentenced Friday to six years and nine months in prison and a fine of $507,000 for corruption. Former Major League Baseball outfielder Raúl Mondesi as mayor of San Cristobal.
Prosecutors accused Mondes, 53, of embezzling $5 million while he was mayor from 2010 to 2016.

Mondes’ political career began in San Cristobal, which he represented as a legislator from 2006 to 2010.
After serving as mayor, he made an unsuccessful bid for the Senate.

Dominican prosecutors filed several charges against Mondes, including forgery, criminal conspiracy and criminal mischief.
His son Adalberto began his career with the Kansas City Royals, which they won in 2015. He is currently a free agent after suffering a knee injury in March 2023..
