Getting into the NCAA transfer portal isn’t everything. That’s because several Florida State players have returned to the team after opting to explore other options. That hasn’t been the case this season, as more than 15 Seminoles are out of the program.

Former FSU running back Malcolm Ray announced Saturday afternoon that he will continue his college career at Rutgers. Ray planned to return to Tallahassee and took an official visit to North Carolina State before deciding to play his senior year with the Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers is missing at least one starter on its interior defensive line, and Ray could play a big role in the program. He will likely get a chance in New Jersey, as the Seminoles return potential defensive tackles like junior Joshua Farmer, redshirt freshman Darrell Jackson and sophomore Daniel Lyons.

Ray became a member of the defensive line rotation with Florida State in 2023, recording 18 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and one pass while playing in all 14 games. He missed all of spring practice while recovering from an injury. Ray was on the field for just 246 snaps, less playing time than he received in 2021 and 2022, and something that factored into his decision to transfer.

The Florida native signed with the Seminoles as a three-star prospect in the 2019 class under former coach Willie Taggart. Played in 42 games, seven starts, totaling 60 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery for the Maroon and Gold.

In addition to Ray, the Seminoles include Tate Rodmaker, AJ Duffy (San Diego State University) and Rodney Hill, CJ Campbell (FAU), Markston Douglas (Arizona State University), Preston Daniel. wide receiver Goldie Lawrence. , offensive lineman Bless Harris (TCU), offensive lineman Thomas Schrader, offensive lineman Daughtry Richardson (FAU), offensive lineman Qae shon Sapp (ECU), tight end Gilber Edmond and defensive lineman Ayobami Tifase (Georgia Tech), linebacker.

DJ Lundy (Colorado), linebacker Dylan Brown-Turner and kicker Tyler Keltner (Oklahoma) will enter the portal in the new transfer period, which closed on January 4.
