The Alpine F1 team underwent a number of changes last year, including the departure of sporting director Alan Permane, who had been with the team for more than 30 years. .
Former Alpine F1 sporting director Alan Permane has spoken of his “devastating” departure from the team last year.
Permane has been part of the team based in Enstone since 1989 when it used the name Benetton.
The British engineer rose through the ranks of the outfit as it transformed faces including Renault and Lotus.
During the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix, Alpine confirmed that Permane and then team principal Otmar Szafnauer would leave the team at the end of that weekend.
After Permane took over as RB sporting director, he spoke exclusively to RacingNews365 about the difficulties involved in leaving the team.
“It was devastating, of course,” he said. “It was terrible. We had a hard time last summer and then the fall.
“Then I talked to some people. And it [RB] was really exciting and really good. It seemed like a really good project and I’m very lucky to be here.
Permane admitted that the wounds left by his sudden departure from Alpine had not properly healed until he took over at RB.
“I would say [it took] a few months,” Permane described. “Until I was fully committed to it. When I came here, it was easy. Everything really became a lot easier.
“I purposely started watching the games again after it was done, which was probably early November, something like that.
“August was terrible, September was bad. In October, things got better and once it was done, there was no going back.“

Asked, did Alpine give a reason for letting go, Permane said: “No, they didn’t. I can’t comment on that.” Obviously they had a point.
Permane is one of F1’s longest-serving chief engineers, with a career spanning more than three decades.
Having built a strong reputation, Permane revealed that he has received many messages of support from all over since.
“One a wonderful thing was the fact that I got a lot of support from people in the yard and things,” he said, which is nice to hear.
