Ferrari-bound Lewis Hamilton’s health claim that speaks volumes about F1 rivals

Lewis Hamilton insists he’s the best he’s ever been behind the wheel, despite trailing F1 table-topper Max Verstappen by five places. The 39-year-old has had a mixed season so far, clinching his first two race wins of the season but largely struggling for consistency.

He’s failed to build on the third-place finish he secured last term, and has looked a shadow of his former relentless title-hoovering self. But his latest comments will be music to the ears of Ferrari, who will sign Hamilton in 2025.

Speaking to The Times, the Mercedes ace claimed that he is at his peak both physically and mentally, and that his all-round technical ability has never been better. “Honestly, right now I feel I’m healthier than I’ve ever been,” he said.

“I’m in such a good place, physically and mentally. My reaction times are still quicker than the young guys. I think I’m a better driver than I was at 22.

“I was just young, energetic and ruthless, but no finesse, no balance,” he added. “I didn’t know how to be a team player, how to be a leader. Being a good racing driver, it’s not just about being fast, it’s about being the most rounded.”

Considering the majority of his F1 rivals, such as Verstappen, Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, Oscar Piastri and his Mercedes team-mate George Russell, are in their mid-20s, claiming to have the best reflexes on the grid is really saying something.

Hamilton caused a sensation in February when it emerged that he’d be signing for Ferrari in 2025, ending his 11-year association with Mercedes. The three-year deal, which is said to be worth over £350million, is testament to Hamilton’s professionalism and high standards, particularly given the fact he’ll be 40 when his contract begins.

Heading into the US Grand Prix, Hamilton is sixth in the Drivers’ Championship, just 16 points behind Carlos Sainz, the man he replace at Ferrari. The Brit is the most successful driver in the history of the US Grand Prix, with six wins under his belt.
