Athens
Dell McGee has been involved with the Georgia football program for as long as he can remember when The Bulldogs deserved it. Here’s the bus to training camp.
His
time at Georgia was preceded not only by the indoor practice area, but also by national championships and all the successes of the Kirby Smart era. He is the last member of the original Smart staff in Georgia.

His time running the Georgia backroom may be coming to an end. McGee has been mentioned as a finalist for the Georgia State job, Bruce Feldman and Seth Emerson of The Athletic report. Buster Faulkner, a former Georgia analyst and current coordinator at Georgia Tech, is the other finalist.
Multiple
reports say McGee should take the job, but there has been no official announcement or offer at press time.

Given
his time at Georgia State, it’s only natural that McGee is a finalist for the position. He was born in Columbus, Georgia. Not only was he a high school football coach at Georgia State, but he also coached briefly at Georgia Southern and Georgia.

As Georgia’s running backs coach, McGee did everything he could. He recruited elite players and immediately turned them into NFL draft picks. Six Georgia running backs played. That number would increase to eight if Daijun Edwards and Kendall Milton were drafted.
Three
of those players would go on to become Pro Bowlers in Nick Chubb, D’Andre Swift and James Cook. After his retirement, McGee will return to the NFL.

McGee has talked in the past about wanting to be a head coach and admits that something is out of his reach. He’s focused on doing whatever it takes to make Georgia better.
He’s
been instrumental in making Georgia what it is today.

“Coach Smart has been a blessing to me. Iwant to thank him for the opportunity to be the running backs coach here. McGee said in August 2022. “It also gave me the opportunity to lead our football team andour offensive line. Coach Smart has done everything as an assistant, as a coach, as an assistant coach. He’s great and he’s all about getting his assistants going.

There are quite a few assistants who have gone on to become head coaches, and it’s special for me to be a part of their legacy. But my biggest role is being the head coach. The runners I can do here. like a head coach every day because I’m managing the running backs and special teams, and I’m able to do it all as a head coach.
