Buxton departs F1 TV to join FOX as IndyCar anchor

Will Buxton, one of Formula 1’s most recognizable broadcasters, has announced his departure from F1 TV to join FOX as the play-by-play commentator for the NTT IndyCar Series, beginning with the 2025 season.

Buxton, who has been a key part of Formula 1 coverage for well over a decade, rose to prominence through his on-screen work for F1 TV and his appearances in Netflix’s hit docuseries Drive to Survive.

Now, The Briton is set to bring his enthusiasm and expertise to IndyCar, calling races alongside former drivers-turned commentators, James Hinchcliffe and Townsend Bell.

A Return to His Roots

This move marks a homecoming of sorts for Buxton, who began his career in American motorsport broadcasting 15 years ago when SPEED Channel offered him his first break.

Reflecting on this new chapter, Buxton described the opportunity as both thrilling and humbling.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be embarking on this new and incredibly exciting opportunity to return to FOX, exactly 15 years after SPEED Channel offered a young and very green reporter his first break on network TV,” he said.

As the voice of IndyCar’s 17-race calendar, which kicks off with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on March 2, Buxton is eager to bring the excitement of the series to fans worldwide.

“I’ve been a fan of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES for as long as I’ve been watching racing cars and have always marveled at the skill and bravery of its incredible drivers,” he continued.

“To have the chance to tell their stories and call their races is a dream come true, and something I never imagined I’d have the honor of doing. It’s a tremendous responsibility, and not one I take lightly.”

A Love Affair with IndyCar

Buxton’s passion for IndyCar dates back to his first experience covering the series a decade ago.

In a heartfelt statement shared on Instagram, he expressed his deep admiration for the sport and its storied venues, particularly the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS).

“A decade ago, I reported on my first Indycar races, including my first visit to IMS,” he wrote. “I fell in love with the place immediately.

The history, the passion, the emotion that whips through the air as the cars rocket past you, sucking the air from your lungs, breathing tradition and understanding into your soul.

“I have always loved Indycar, always been enthralled by the excitement of its racing and stunned by the skills of its incredible drivers.

“And while I always hoped that one day I might, I never imagined that I ever actually would have the opportunity to join the series full time.”

Saying Goodbye to F1

Buxton also took the opportunity to bid an emotional farewell to F1 TV, where he has been an integral part of the team since 2018.

“I want to take the opportunity to thank everyone at F1 TV for seven incredibly happy years,” he said.

“I’m so proud of all we created and all we built, and I’m excited to watch 2025 shake out, admittedly, for now at least, from my couch.”

As Buxton shifts his focus to IndyCar, he acknowledged the significanace of his new role and the trust placed in him to tell the stories of the series’ drivers and teams.

“That I will get to do so in the role and with the responsibility that I do in 2025 is a tremendous honor,” he said.

“And while I am unbelievably excited, I am only too aware of the enormity of the task I am undertaking, and the trust placed in me.”

Buxton’s IndyCar journey will begin in earnest when the 2025 season kicks off in St. Petersburg.
