The Tuohy family’s conservatorship arrangement with Michael Oher has been terminated by a Tennessee judge.
Former NFL player Michael Oher’s conservatorship agreement with a Memphis couple who took him in when he was a high school student is being terminated, a Tennessee judge announced on Friday.
Judge Kathleen Gomes of the Shelby County Probate Court announced that she is nullifying the 2004 agreement that gave Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy control over Oher’s finances.
When Oher was 18 and living with the couple, he signed the contract because he was a standout high school football player who was being recruited by colleges.
According to Gomes, the case was not being dropped. Oher has demanded that the Tuohys give a financial accounting of any money that may have been paid to them as part of the agreement, alleging that they used his name, image, and likeness to enrich themselves and that they lied to him about the agreement’s implications for him, i.e. that the Tuohys were adopting him.
Gomes expressed her dismay that such an agreement was ever reached.
In her 43-year career, she claimed, she had never witnessed a conservatorship agreement with a non-disabled person. She said, “I can’t believe it was finished. While participating in the video conference call, Oher and Tuohys only listened.

According to Oher, he unknowingly agreed to a contract that signed off on the rights to his life story, which was portrayed in the movie The Blind Side.
In the movie, which dramatized how the Tuohys adopted Oher when he was a homeless teenager and helped him succeed, Sandra Bullock won an Oscar for her performance as Leigh Anne Tuohy.
At the 2010 awards, the movie was also a best picture nominee.
The 37-year-old Oher filed a petition accusing the Tuohys of misleading him when he signed documents appointing them as his conservators, which he mistakenly believed would also appoint them as his adoptive parents.
