Mercedes identify key error as Toto Wolff teases Lewis Hamilton boost before Las Vegas GP
Mercedes are working on redeeming themselves in Las Vegas after a disappointing display in Sao Paulo.
Toto Wolff has identified the key error that led to Mercedes’ dismal display at the Brazilian Grand Prix two weeks ago. George Russell suffered a DNF while seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton could only muster a P8 finish leading to questions about what went wrong in Sao Paulo.
They also gave up four points to closest rivals Ferrari in the tussle for second place in the constructor’s standings. Carlos Sainz Jr finished two places ahead of Hamilton while a DNF for Charles Leclerc softened the blow heading into the final two races of the season.
It was a disappointing step back from an excellent showing in Mexico where Hamilton picked up his sixth podium finish of the season while Russell wasn’t far off in P6. However, Hamilton and co will be boosted by Wolff’s insistence that they identified the “wrong turn” with their set-up ahead of the Las Vegas GP this weekend.“We have been hard at work to identify the wrong turn we took with the set-up; we have done that,” said Wolff. “We understand our mistakes and can explain our performance loss to the field. That’s important as we look to secure P2 in the Constructors’ Championship.”
The Silver Arrows’ team principal then gave some insight into how much teams are left in the dark before big races and the work that goes on behind the scenes. “In parallel, we have been preparing for the challenge of racing at a venue that is a complete unknown,” added Wolff.
