Michael van Gerwen has taken to social media to shed a light on his decision to pull out of the competition.
Michael van Gerwen has announced that he will not be competing at the Swiss Darts Trophy this weekend due to illness.
The Dutchman is among several stars who were set to feature in the first-ever PDC tournament to have been held in Switzerland, but he has vowed that ‘health comes first’ as he continues to fight off an illness.
Announcing his decision to withdraw from the competition, Van Gerwen wrote on X: “Unfortunately, I have to withdraw from the Swiss Darts Trophy this weekend as I’m not feeling well.
Not the news I wanted, but health comes first. I’ll be back stronger soon!”
Van Gerwen’s absence comes just days after he pulled out of playing two Players Championship tournaments in Leicester earlier this week.
After winning the Hungarian Darts Trophy last weekend, he boarded a plane to travel to the United Kingdom on Monday but fell ill whilst en route. He quickly ruled himself out of his clashes in Leicester, and it remains to be seen whether he will compete in the three more Players Championship tournaments scheduled for next week.
Van Gerwen will be keen to continue building on the momentum of winning his first Euro Tour tournament in sixteen months before the World Grand Prix takes place next month.
Following his victory in Budapest, Van Gerwen fired a warning to his rivals that he was starting to bounce back to the form that has made him one of the best in the world in years gone by. He said: “This was really important I had to battle really hard
I think I’m on the right way, especially with my new darts. I missed the winning feeling for a long time but now everything falls into place. I want to win more and my love for the game is still there. I need to make sure I keep this momentum going.”
The warning shots from Van Gerwen won’t have gone unnoticed by his fellow competitors and it remains to be seen who responds with a victory in Basel this weekend, with Luke Littler and Luke Humphries both set to compete.
