The start of the second round of the PGA Championship has been delayed.
The second round of the PGA Championship has been suspended after a man was killed in a traffic accident. The first group was due to go out at 12:15pm BST but the start time is set to be delayed until at least 1pm.
The PGA Championship said in a statement at 11:18pm that its next update would come at midday. There would then be at least an hour before play began.
Police confirmed that a man was struck by a shuttle bus and that a full investigation would begin. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering fatal injuries.
A statement from Louisville Metro Police Department read: “About 5:00 ET this morning, the LMPD responded to a call of a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian and a bus.
As a result, the pedestrian received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene. The LMPD Traffic Unit is investigating.”
A PGA Championship statement read: “The start of Round 2 is delayed due to a serious accident near the course. The next update will be at 12pm BST and the starting time will be at least one hour after an update is made.”
They later confirmed the male was a worker at one of the event’s vendors. A statement said: “This morning we were devastated to learn that a worker with one of our vendors was tragically struck and killed by a shuttle bus outside Valhalla Golf Club.
This is heartbreaking to all of us involved with the PGA Championship. We extend our sincere condolences to their family and loved ones.”
In the first round of action, Xander Schauffele hit a major record-equalling 62 to set the pace at the Valhalla Golf Club, Kentucky. Schauffele hit nine birdies in a remarkable round to give his rivals a score to chase heading into the second round
Tony Finau and Sahith Theegala sit in a tie for second on six under, one stroke ahead of Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa and Robert MacIntyre, who were among seven players to post five-under-par 66s.
It is unclear when play will begin in Valhalla. The PGA Championship are yet to provide the update that will be followed by play at least an hour later.
