Victory after victory, after victory. That’s how Nelly Korda made the headlines about three months ago. What has happened since then is a shocking turn of fate. Ever since her withdrawal from the 2024 JM Eagle LA Championship stating exhaustion, the World No. 1 female golfer’s chart has been downhill. Here is a timeline of what has happened to her since her April major win at The Club at Carlton Woods.
5. Nelly Korda loses her streak but still wins her sixth event
Korda had been on a thrilling winning streak ever since the beginning of the season. Her second event this year, the LPGA Drive-On Championship, started with a playoff win against Lydia Ko. After that, she won four more back-to-back titles. This includes the Fir Hills Seri Pak Championship, which was previously known as the DIO Implant LA Open; the Arizona Championship; the T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards; and her first major of the season, the Chevron Championship.
However, right after this, Korda announced how exhausted she had been and sat out of the JM Eagle LA Championship 2024. When she went back on the greens at the Upper Montclair Country Club for the Cognizant Founders Cup, she lost her streak and finished T7.
However, the very next week, Korda reclaimed a winning title at the Liberty National Golf Course. From the purse money of $3,000,000 at the Mizuho Americans Open, she claimed a winning share of $450,000 after a 1-stroke victory against the Australian golfer, Hannah Green However, by the time she won her sixth win this season, Korda had already lost her streak of five straight wins.
Yet that is not the worst that happened to Korda. Going forward from the Mizuho American Open, the female golfer had a tough battle with fate.
4. Nelly Korda missed the cut in the US Women’s Open
The golf community was in tremendous shock when the No. 1 golfer could not make a cut at the Lancaster Country Club. In her very first round at the Lancaster Country Club, Korda hit a septuple bogey on par 3–12. By the end of the day, she had a score of 10 over. Yes, one bad hole, and Korda could see her race for a third major win crumbling. Although she tried to cover her early shortcomings the next day, she was a little too late.
Upon returning from the greens, Korda tried to digest her defeat with a sense of humour. On her Instagram, the golfer shared photos of her from the event. In the caption of the post, she wrote, “Well, that was a 10/10.”
3. Korda continues her new missed cut streak
After her upsetting missed cut at the US Open, Korda continued this new streak of hers at the Blythefield Country Club. In her Meijer LPGA Classic performance, Korda was noted to be one stroke short of making a cut. She remarked upon her own game, “Didn’t play too bad.” She also called this windy week a “tough week.”
In 2021, Korda won the tournament; however, this season, she opened with a 4-over 76. In the second round, Korda started from her tied 133rd position. She was 11 strokes behind Alison Lee, who was leading at that point. The golfer later recognized where she messed up. She reflected, “Chipped in on No. 2. I made a long putt on 1. I made a long putt on 3. Three-putted on 8. I completely slid my momentum down.”
2. Nelly Korda missed yet another cut at the third major of the season
1 major win and 1 missed is how she came at the KMPG Women’s PGA Championship. However, Nelly Korda’s swings added another number of missed cuts in the third major of the season. Korda shot a nine-over par second-round 81, which included a double bogey, eight bogeys—four of which came on the first four holes—and one birdie.
After missing the cut there with her highest score as a pro, Korda was seen crying. The vulnerable side of the champion was unbelievable, yet it is now a reality. She stated with a broken heart, “No words for how I’m playing right now.” She further added, “I’m just going to go home and try to reset.” Moreover, Nelly Korda also added, “A lot went my way at the beginning part of the year, and I’m just giving it back.”
1. Korda got bitten by a dog
When people thought nothing could go worse, it did. Nelly Korda got bitten by a dog. As a consequence, she had to withdraw from her participation in participation in the Ladies European Tour’s Aramco Team Series event, an event that she won last year. With such miserable emotions and a tough physical challenge, Korda announced that she wouldn’t be able to participate in London.
Nelly Korda wrote on Instagram, “I regret to announce that I must withdraw from next week’s Ladies European Tour tournament in London. On Saturday in Seattle, I was bitten by a dog and needed time to receive treatment and recover fully. I apologize to the LET, the sponsors, and my fans for my absence. Thank you for your understanding, and I look forward to returning to the course soon.”
