Today marks exactly three years since Romain Grosjean suffered one of the worst crashes in modern Formula 1 history. After crashing through a barrier on the opening lap of the 2020 dated Bahrain Grand Prix, his Haas car caught fire and after some time in the flames, Grosjean managed to get out and live to tell the tale.
On November 29, 2020, Romain Grosjean narrowly avoided a fatal accident at the Bahrain GP. The French rider made contact with Daniil Kvyat’s AlphaTaur on the opening lap and crashed through the barrier at high speed.
The car immediately split in two and burst into flames.
Freeing himself from the restraints in the cabin, he emerged from the fire and climbed over the guard rail. Almost immediately after that, doctors sent him to an ambulance, after which Grosjean was transported to hospital.
Miraculously the former Haas driver suffered minor injuries compared to the extent of the accident – he only suffered minor burns and a sprained ankle.

At the time, F1 was operating during the COVID-19 pandemic, and F1 returned to the same location in Skahir a week later, albeit with a new setup.
Grosjean was soon released from hospital but would never compete in F1 again as he had to leave Haas at the end of the season. He was replaced by Haas reserve driver Pietro Fittipaldi in the last two races of the campaign.
Since then he has driven in IndyCar, winning six podiums in the past three seasons.
