The ongoing investigation into Mercedes ‘sabotage’ allegations has taken a new turn.
The news comes after the team celebrated a positive weekend at the Formula 1 Spanish GP, where Lewis Hamilton secured his first podium of the season, finishing one place ahead of teammate George Russell in P4. F1
On June 12, an anonymous email was sent to individuals across the paddock as well as various members of the media.
Insiders claims have been made that some at Mercedes have made a deliberate effort to sabotage Hamilton’s car in what will be his final season with the Brackley-based outfit before he moves to Ferrari. Team principal Toto Wolff quickly shot down any suggestion that this was the case and confirmed that the matter was in the hands of the police.
“People can’t hide behind their phones or computers and abuse groups or drivers,” he said. “I don’t know what some of the conspiracy theorists and crazies out there are thinking.“
The head of Mercedes, Toto Wolff, was furious at the accusations.
Lewis Hamilton’s final year at Mercedes before joining Ferrari came after Hamilton himself suggested favoritism could be shown to his team-mate, which Wolff also dismissed at the time. In the latest development, police have now confirmed that the sender had committed no offence.
