Reports surfaced of he and Rabbitohs teammate Cody Walker receiving special treatment at the club, leading to assistant coach Sam Burgess suddenly leaving.

That led to the son of South Sydney great Clive Churchill publicly lambasting Mitchell, which resulted in the former being stripped of his regular grand final day medal honours.

Mitchell was then accused of snubbing a young fan’s photo request at a junior football event in Sydney’s west, although the man’s claim on 2GB radio was largely ridiculed afterwards and Mitchell labelled him an “idiot”.
